Visiting Saltaire and the Saltaire United Reformed Church

Saltaire World Heritage site provides an excellent opportunity for a day out. With several other interesting venues in the immediate area it also provides the opportunity for a short break.

The village and church have much to offer. A walk around the village provides a wealth of interest, especially if you are in the company of one of the village guides. The United Reformed Church is open every Sunday afternoon throughout the year except when it falls on Christmas or Boxing days. Sit in the beauty of the building in quiet contemplation or explore the interior with the paddle guide of information or talk to one of the church guides on duty. A small café is also open on Sundays to enhance your visit. From Easter to the end of September the church is opened by volunteers, subject to their availability, every afternoon from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00p.m. Entrance is free but you are encouraged to put some money into the box to assist in the upkeep of the church. Photography inside the building is allowed, but you are asked to make a donation. If you are coming any great distance check on opening first.

Tourism Groups

If you are planning a visit with a group, from a few to a coach load, then the church can be opened by special arrangement. What is more, we can open up the café and greet you with teas or coffees and biscuits. We ask for £1.75 per head for this.

It is vitally important to book and commit to a special visit well in advance as these arrangements are proving very popular.  Only a limited number of groups can be accommodated in any one week as the arrangements are dependent upon the availability of volunteer effort.

Please bear in mind that there is no wheel chair access to the Church as yet. See our renovation page for plans for that.

School and College Groups

Saltaire and the United Reformed Church offer a great opportunity for project work to supplement both history and art subjects within the curriculum. The church supports this by offering educational group visits by special arrangement at a time to suit the class or group. A room can be provided where students are able to eat their packed lunch sheltered from the environment. A talk about the history of Saltaire and the church within it, pointing out the interesting features within the church, can be provided. It will be tailored to the age group of the students involved. The school or college is requested to give a donation towards the maintenance of the building with a guide line of 50p per pupil. The visit can be combined with a tour of the village provided by guides dressed in Victorian costume to suit the history of the church and village. There is a set charge per pupil for this.
Naturally, it is expected that all visiting juniors or children will be accompanied by responsible teachers or approved helpers.

Salts Walks - Guided Walks around Saltaire

It is also possible to start your guided tour of the village with a talk in the church. The village guides, Salts Walks, will take over when you have had your tea or coffee and made use of the church facilities. The best way to understand and enjoy Saltaire is to take one of these fascinating walks. Allow one of the experienced guides to inform, and entertain you, as they personally conduct you around the World Heritage site. Each participant receives a high quality laminated book mark with the house and history of a character that used to live in the village described on it. Tea or coffee will take about 45 to 60 minutes in the church café. A talk and walk will take about an hour following that. The walks can be tailored to your needs. Salts Walks make a charge of £3.75 per head (Children £2.75 age 12 & under) for a tour.
